Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.

JDRF is the leading global organization focused on T1D research. Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, JDRF is the largest charitable supporter of T1D research. The goal of JDRF is to improve the lives of every person affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D. More than 80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education.

Fund A Cure is a unique opportunity to make a 100% tax-deductible donation to JDRF that will fund vital research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes. Since 1994, JDRF has raised over $186 million through Fund A Cure alone.

Brianne Rondello's Story
March 28, 2011 I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.  In a moment my entire life changed.

I was diagnosed 10 days before my 11th birthday, one of my first thoughts was now I can't have birthday cake.  I know that is silly but I am a kid and I LOVE cake, so for me that was devastating.

My normal day now is so different, I have to test my sugars at least 4-5 times a day count the carbs for EVERYTHING I eat dose my insulin. I miss school when my numbers are too high and I have keytones in my body.  I miss class when I have to check my numbers.  If I am low I have to have someone walk with me to the nurses office just in case I pass out.  My school nurse, Ursela and I have become good friends she is like my school mom.  I do worry that someday something will happen at school or cheer leading and I will be "that" girl.  I just want to be normal!

I have been competing as a Cheerleader for a few years and didn't know how this would affect me going forward.  I had so many questions and
fears about my future.  When I am at cheer practice I have to really be careful to listen to my body to make sure my blood sugars stay in a good place.  On days I have competition I check my sugars A LOT!!
Exercise and adrenaline can play with my sugars.  I have been really lucky, I have awesome coaches that really help me.

I am coming up to my 1 year anniversary, time has gone so fast.  I have been lucky so far, no hospital stays for me.  But I know that it will happen someday and that is a really scary thing.  My mom has always done her best to make sure I am doing what I should be, some days I keep on top of things really well and other days I try really hard to forget that I have Diabetes.

Please join me in the fund-raising effort for JDRF, I go to the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes and it is such a great place.
Everyone there is working so hard to find a cure, I pray that we will find one soon.
